From day one as Treasurer, Alexi demonstrated his commitment to transparency and reform. He enacted the most sweeping ethics order in the history of his office, banning contributions from banks that do business with the state and from lobbyists. Now, as a candidate, Alexi is refusing contributions from federal lobbyists and corporate PACs. I know he'll continue his commitment to true reform in the United States Senate.
Alexi Giannoulias has the experience and bold ideas to move our nation forward and build a 21st century economy based on principles of fairness and innovation. He is the only candidate to outline a comprehensive plan to get our economy moving again and rein in the corporate practices that got us into this mess.
Alexi believes that if America is to remain a superpower in the 21st-century, we must shed our 20th-century energy mindset and invest in new technologies and new strategies that protect our environment and grow our economy. His plan would promote energy independence, economic growth, quality jobs, international competitiveness and environmental sustainability.
Alexi's record of standing up for Illinois working families makes him the best choice for women who want to send a principled, progressive Democrat to the United States Senate.
Alexi supported passage of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act and supports the Paycheck Fairness Act, which would empower women to negotiate for equal pay.
He's been unequivocally pro-choice, and has been endorsed by Planned Parenthood. I like that he talks not just about preserving choice, but also about more funding for preventive initiatives aimed at reducing the number of unwanted pregnancies.
But above all, Alexi has been there for women in the health care debate. From the beginning of his campaign, he made clear that as Senator he would supports congressional efforts to guarantee quality, affordable health care for all Americans and would work to ensure that preventive care and early detection programs, which include things like mammograms and pap smears, are easily accessible.
He also has my vote because of his strongly supports the Paid Parental Leave Act, which provides federally employed parents four weeks of paid leave to spend at home with a new child.
On these and so many other issues, Alexi represents the best interests of women and their families. That is why I'm so excited about his candidacy, and why I will proudly cast my vote for him to become our next Senator.
Alexi believes that all Americans, regardless of sexual orientation, are part of the American family, and that the federal government should extend the same rights and responsibilities to all of its citizens.
